One of the worst phrases that gets deployed to new parents – whether they’re experiencing joy or troubles – is ‘just you wait until…’

Having a good time? Hah! Just you wait until they’re born, or walking, or kissing, or driving cars!
Think you’re prepared? Hah! Just you wait, all your plans are going to fail!
Having a hard time? Hah! Just you wait, it gets harder! You have no idea what you’re in for! You’ll beg for things to be this easy!
Complaining? Just you wait! You’ll look back on this time and wish you appreciated it more!

But there’s another side, I think. A more hopeful one. Like:

I know it’s hard. I know it’s so much harder than anyone could communicate it would be. But I promise that it does get better. Sometimes it takes years, but there’s little spots of happiness along the way: the first time they make you laugh. The first time they get out of the car on their own. The first time they play with a baby. Watching them enjoy something you love for the first time.

Don’t despair. Just wait.

It gets better than you can even imagine.
